Wayne Johnston was a little embarassed by these records. A big admirer of Spade Cooley, he decided to hire some El Paso symphony violinists for this date to try to capture a similar sound. It didn't work. Cooley's fiddlers may have been trained musicians, but they knew how to play swing and western music. These El Paso violinists hadn't a clue and Wayne told me that he considered it a failed experiment. Still, it's nice to hear Ruth Dalton --I have some great live stuff by her with the band. It's a shame that the band's mainstay, vocalist-guitarist Lindsey Smith, didn't get to sing on any of the Bonnie Blue side, because he was a fine singer. It's also a shame that these recordings weren't made at a time when Wayne had some of the great swing fiddlers he employed over the years, who included the jazz viola great Don Decker, as well as Troy Passmore, Bill Matthews and Dub Purvis...
ReplyDeleteEvery time I visit my want list gets longer and longer... GREAT track... good players. Even enjoy the use of strings in that middle-section. Adds a cinematic feel to the affair.
