Another Excellent Record!

Having resolved the problem of uploading sound files, more by luck than judgement to be honest, I can now get back to posting the odd obscurity. As this matter was fixed both unexpectedly and all of a sudden, I didn't have anything lined up for this post, fortunately I had a couple of things sitting about, so it's pot luck this time.Here's a little gem from the Ohio EXCELLENT label by Dave and Cornny, the Dave is clearly Dave Woolum, whilst the Cornny appears to be a Mr Cornelius, about whom I know absolutely nothing, mind you apart from reeling off a list of labels that Dave Woolum recorded for, there's not a lot I can say about him either.

LULA BELL SI

I seem to have encountered a rather serious technical problem, whilst I can upload scans and type text, I cannot embed audio files. As yet I am unable find a way to resolve this problem, but I am working on it. In the meantime I will list the URL link to the relevant audio file; Copy and paste the link into your browser and hopefully it will take you to the audio file where you can hear the music and download the track if you so desire. When I eventually figure out this problem I will edit these posts and replace the URL link with a player. 

Looks like we're back to normal now, so I'll be uploading some more material later this week.

Down to business now, recently Lula Bell Si's name has cropped up on a couple of blogs (one of which was somelocalloser). Nice to see her material reaching a wider audience, and her HAMILTON recordings are jolly good and deserve to be heard by more people. Lesser know is her solitary CACTUS offering, relatively obscure but quite a gem.

THE ROGER SISTERS

During its relatively short life the Cincinnati based EXCELLENT label put out a fairly decent selection of Country, Bluegrass, and Sacred records. One of the harder ones to track down is the Roger Sisters offering on the label. It's not a hot bopper, nor is it a rockabilly effort, it's just a pleasant female duet reminiscent of The Davis Sisters. In fact if you should ever find yourself at a loose end one day, why not try to count the number Davis Sisters' song titles contained in "My Misery"!

JESS WILLARD

The BEAR FAMILY CD "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor" (BCD 16256 AH) contains Jess Willard's complete CAPITOL collection, including the unissued recordings, plus both sides of his sole offering on the EKKO label. This was not the sum total of Willard's recorded output, he also had releases on G&G, and SUNDOWN. Although I have not as yet managed to track down a copy of his SUNDOWN record,. I was under the impression that he had just the one release on G&G and that was when the label had adopted the KA-HI name, but there were in fact at least two records on the label by Willard. I am indebted to Joe Watson for drawing my attention to what appears to be his first effort for the label, a subtle reworking of "Hillbilly Heaven" in which his old buddy Jack Guthrie features centre stage. Does anyone have any idea who Bill, Red, Art and Steve, collectively known as The Melody Boys, were?

SNUFFY SMITH on SNUFFY SMITH!

A nice little custom disc out of San Angelo, interestingly it is a 4 STAR pressing with both sides given 4 STAR master numbers (4* 3172 and 4* 3173). Smith also recorded for the Dallas based STAR TALENT label, some of which were also pressed by 4 STAR with master numbers, plus a later release on a VOGUE label (not the picture disc label). Record has seen better days and is a wee bit noisy.

CURT FURR - CRYSTAL

A little something for those who enjoy listening to 4 STAR "OP" Custom pressings. I'm not quite sure what Curt is trying to do with "Candy Store", the pianist manages to weave in a few familiar phases seemingly of Scottish origin! , but there's a nice steel bridge. However, Curt seems much more comfortable on the slow side.
