Hear "Tennessee Saturday Night"
I wonder if "Texas Blackie" is Blackie Crawford? He worked with Billy Gray around this time.
ReplyDeleteAndrew:
ReplyDeleteYou may well be right.
I am racking my brain trying to remember the details of a circa 1949 film short I once had on video. I think it was broadcast maybe 15-20 years ago on the old "Nostalgia" cable TV channel. It was just a single song and I cannot remember the title. Very crudely done.
I can't recall any telecast credits, but it was a duet of two guys. One of them used an alias that I figured surely must be Blackie Crawford. "Texas Blackie" sounds suspiciously familiar.
I can't recall the name used by the other guy--it may have been a real name or a fake, nor can I recall if I figured it must be Gray.
I no longer have the video tape, but it may be known in other collections?
It was Billy Gray. Would love to have the video if anyone has it. He was my dad.
DeleteAndrew:
ReplyDeleteJust had another slight bubbling up from my memory:
That film short may have used the title "Talented Tramps" or something like that, without any personal names used anywhere in the credits.
I've heard the rumor that Blackie Crawford made a film short, but never tracked down any reliable info on it. "Talented Tramps" sounds vaguely familiar.

ReplyDeleteThis is the short:

You can also find it mentioned at IMDB, where they have the cast named as Billy Gray and Robert Larry.
IMDB erroneously assumes Billy Gray is the child actor Billy Gray.
Is Blackie Crawford's real name Robert Larry Crawford or possibly Robert Lawrence Crawford?
I think Robert Larry introduces himself as "Texas Blackie", but there was something that tipped me off that he must be Blackie Crawford--possibly the songs performed, possibly the association with Gray, or possibly a resemblance to pictures I had seen of Crawford at the time (1980s).
I just googled and found a cemetery record for Robert L. "Blackie" Crawford at Sanangelotexas.org. It is an Excel spreadsheet that says he was buried 1/20/84 in Block 87A. I am betting this his full name is Robert Larry Crawford or Robert Lawrence Crawford and that this is in fact THE Blackie Crawford and is aka the Robert Larry in Talented Tramps.
ReplyDelete"Is Blackie Crawford's real name Robert Larry Crawford or possibly Robert Lawrence Crawford?"
ReplyDeleteYes. Robert Lawrence Crawford was Blackie Crawford's real name.
This increases the chance that the film "Talented Tramps" features Blackie Crawford and Billy Gray.
All of the Leon Jenkins sides were probably recorded at Quinn's in Houston.
ReplyDeleteI'm searching for old newspaper clippings that might list Leon Jenkins and the Easterners. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI know this is an old post but Blackie Crawfords real name was Robert Larry he is in Talented Tramps and made another movie around the same time. I know this because my grandpa was his brother and was at one time part of the western Cherokees as the bass player
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to wonder if that pic of Blackie Crawford and Curly Chalker playing that Stone Arch Ranch that's doing the rounds, if it might be a version of the Texas Rhythm Riders as the drummer does not look like Jimmy Dennis the Tune Toppers / Western Cherokees / Cherokee Cowboys drummer (at least not to me..) and does anyone know who Curly Rogers might be?...
