LUCKY WHITE on the COURTNEY Label

There are at least two releases on COURTNEY by Lucky White And His Dude Ranch Playboys; both of the two known releases are wrongly numbered.

COURTNEY 129 (COURTNEY 229)
LUCKY WHITE AND HIS DUDE RANCH PLAYBOYS
Teddy Bear (129.A)
() ()
Jackson Stomp (129.B)
(Leodie Jackson) (No Publisher Noted)

COURTNEY 129 is wrongly numbered, release is actually
COURTNEY 229.

Although it's only pure conjecture, I suspect that “Jackson Stomp” is an earlier recording by Leodie Jackson which has no connection with Lucky White and his band.

COURTNEY 130 (COURTNEY 230)
LUCKY WHITE AND HIS DUDE RANCH PLAYBOYS
Down And Out Blues (Vocal – Lucky White) (130.A)
(Lucky White) (No Publisher Noted)
That Naggin’ Wife Of Mine (Vocal – Leodie Jackson) (130.B)
(Leodie Jackson) (No Publisher Noted)

COURTNEY 130 is wrongly numbered, release is actually
COURTNEY 230.

A side has CR 229.B in deadwax which has been deleted and replaced with CR 230.A. B side has 137.A in deadwax

“Down And Out Blues” appears to have been scheduled for release, coupled with “Teddy Bear”, as the ‘B’ side of COURTNEY 129 (229). However it was issued as the A side of COURTNEY 130 (230), with a much earlier recording by Leodie Jackson on the flipside, which infact is a reissue of COURTNEY 137.A.

Hear "Down And Out Blues"

See "Spot The Difference #1" for audio file of COURTNEY 230

  1. Sorry to still be confused so was the red label the 1st press number 137 & the blue label 2nd press of 137 really 230? If so were does the black label fit in by Lucky white?
The only thing I have on Courtney is off a cd & listed as Leodie Jackson & His Western Swingsters "Steeling The Blues Courtney (CA) 78 - 104. No date of release.

  2. Al:

Thanks for that great pic of Leodie.

Any chance you have or can post "Jackson Stomp" on Courtney?

I will relay those Curt Hinson tunes to Vernon Hester. He'll be grateful.

  3. If I have this right, I believe that the first issue of COURTNEY 137 by Leodie Jackson is the one with the maroon label, the second issue of COURTNEY 137 by Leodie Jackson is the one with the black label. The release credited to Lucky White (the blue label one) with the incorrect issue number (there are other earlier issues on COURTNEY at 129 and 130),is a reissue of the black label COURTNEY release by Leodie Jackson. Regarding "Jackson Stomp" although I have no note of it having been issued previously, I still believe it to be an earlier recording, alas I do not have a copy, nor have I heard the disc.

  4. Hi, my daughter sent me you're web page here, Lucky White was my father, he passed away in the 90's. If I can locate some old pictures of him through family I will email them to you. I do remember one of him and his 'Dude Ranch Playboys" when I was a child. He had a large band compared to what you see today. Thanks for researching Hillbilly music!! Lucky White's daughter Linda.
